Juan E. Gilbert, Ph.D.

Juan E. Gilbert, Ph.D., is the Andrew Banks Family Preeminence Endowed Professor, Distinguished Professor and Provost Fellow at the University of Florida. As Provost Fellow, he is program chair of the Artificial Intelligence University Summit (AI for US), serves on university-wide AI Ethics and Policy Working Group, and faculty lead for UF's first Undergraduate Fellows in AI program.

From 2015 to 2025 he chaired UF's Computer & Information Science & Engineering Department, leading more than 55 faculty, a total enrollment of over 4,000 students and an annual budget of more than $10 million. During his tenure the department created the Human-Centered Computing Ph.D. and UF's first online degree program. He previously chaired the Human Centered Computing Division in Clemson University's School of Computing (2009 – 2014) and was a member of the Auburn University faculty (2000 – 2009).

Nationally, he served on the National Science Board from 2024 to 2026, appointed by President Joseph R. Biden, and has served the National Academies on more than 30 occasions, including three consensus committees. He has testified before Congress on election technology.

He is a laureate of the National Medal of Technology and Innovation awarded by President Joseph R. Biden (2022) and a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring awarded by President Barack Obama (2011). He is a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and a Fellow of the IEEE, ACM, AAAS and the National Academy of Inventors. He holds a Ph.D. and an M.S. in computer science from the University of Cincinnati and a B.S. in applied science (systems analysis) from Miami University (OH).
